The Necessity of Politics and a Principled Approach
Those who follow my writings will recall that I am not interested in practical politics. However, I would also like to point out that I believe there are certain fundamental principles underpinning practical politics. These principles include issues such as social justice, human rights and democracy. Furthermore, I believe that politics should be organised in a way that is transparent, principled and does not restrict social development. Within this framework, I believe that people should have equal rights, and I argue that we must work actively to ensure that these principles reach all sections of society.
These principles can be formulated as follows:
In politics, it is essential to rely on one’s own social and political principles and strength. The individual, group or social segment engaged in politics must, above all, rely on its own principles, vision for the future and system of thought. In this context, the values and beliefs held by a politician shape their decision-making processes and policies. These principles go beyond merely serving as a guide; they deepen the politician’s relationship with society and help to build trust. A self-assured politician also possesses the capacity to motivate others, which in turn expands their sphere of influence. Furthermore, whilst adapting to changing social dynamics, they avoid deviating from their ideological foundations, thereby creating an opportunity to make a lasting impact. In this way, it becomes possible to conduct effective politics at both the individual and societal levels.
Politics must be conducted in accordance with principles and values. Of course, different sections of society have, and will continue to have, their own interests and expectations. However, defending the interests of these sections does not mean engaging in self-serving politics. In this regard, politics should not merely be a tool serving the interests of specific groups; rather, it should serve as a platform for upholding universal values such as justice, equality and fairness. Taking into account the wishes and expectations of various sections of society is of the utmost importance in order to recognise and respect this diversity. At the same time, issues such as how these interests are to be balanced and how individuals’ rights are to be safeguarded constitute the most fundamental responsibilities of politics. In short, a genuine political approach must demonstrate a stance that safeguards everyone’s rights without disregarding social values.
Politics should not be life itself. A person must possess the strength, fortitude, wisdom and foresight to observe and evaluate politics in order to understand the needs and expectations of society. These qualities require a rich inner life; for possessing a deep understanding and a well-developed mindset enhances one’s capacity to make better decisions. Particularly in the complex and ever-changing world we live in, one should not remain in politics for longer than necessary; this can negatively affect one’s mental health and jeopardise social harmony. Appearing to be involved in politics both degrades one’s character and undermines the value of the principles one upholds. Instead, individuals should make their mark through alternative avenues such as self-improvement, engaging with the arts, or contributing to society. This not only enables them to lead a fulfilling life but also makes a positive contribution to the progress of society.
Ethics and Politics: An Area of Tension
Ethics are of great importance in politics. However, narrowing the scope of real politics by substituting it with ethical discourse—and, moreover, conducting politics under this guise—constitutes a major ethical violation. Furthermore, as it silences the subject and renders it invisible by establishing a hierarchy, it is an ideological and, ultimately, apolitical stance. Such an approach disregards social dynamics and stifles critical thinking. Consequently, politics ceases to be a vital struggle and instead becomes a tool serving to preserve the status quo. An ethical understanding of politics must be founded on the principles of social equality and justice, thereby ensuring that individuals’ voices are heard.
Politics is not merely a profession; it is also a matter of personnel, and success in this field is directly linked to the strength of one’s character. Those lacking sound character cannot possess the ability to engage in politics, for such individuals tend to surround themselves with a clique of sycophants; this situation leads to a syndrome that stifles their capacity for true leadership and the ability to exert a positive influence. In the example of the Roman Empire, one of the greatest signs of political corruption was the influence of this kind of entourage mentality on those in power. Over time, this corruption weakened the fundamental dynamics of society and adversely affected the functioning of the state. At the same time, this approach has undermined public confidence in politics and jeopardised social cohesion. Consequently, the importance of healthy interaction and a strong character in politics is once again understood, supported by historical examples.
Power relations in politics involve not only the existence of individuals or groups, but also a series of complex factors that influence how these relations are shaped and the social dynamics at play. However, one cannot conclude from this that politics consists solely of power relations. This is because there are specific conditions at play, and you must be able to analyse these conditions correctly. This analysis is not merely a theoretical examination; it also entails taking current events and social trends into account. Otherwise, you will either overestimate your own power, make mistakes out of misplaced confidence and end up in a sorry state, or you will act as a bit-part player in someone else’s game, moving in accordance with their interests and end up humiliated. For this reason, understanding and shaping both the dynamics of power and the current situation is of the utmost critical importance for achieving success in politics.
Between Interests and Principles
Politics is certainly not something to be disparaged, taken lightly or ignored. The decisions made by policymakers and leaders have a direct impact on society’s daily life, well-being and future. Ultimately, we live in a society and a world shaped by politics, and we must give it the attention it deserves. Engaging with politics to make our voices heard, defend our rights and create a fairer society is the responsibility of us all. For this reason, failing to engage with politics and leaving it solely in the hands of others is one of the greatest mistakes one can make.
In politics, balance and a sound analysis of the prevailing conditions are essential. True politics requires a deep understanding that goes beyond merely describing changing conditions; it must encompass why and to what extent these conditions have changed. At the same time, a comprehensive analysis of the prevailing trends that may dominate the future is also essential. For this reason, an effective political strategy necessitates following a course that is as balanced (reasonable, realistic) as possible. For politics that is not adapted to the circumstances returns like a boomerang to strike the one who launched it. In this context, it is of great importance for leaders to adopt a proactive approach, taking into account not only the current situation but also potential scenarios. In this way, it will be possible to formulate strategic plans capable of withstanding the uncertainties brought about by change. This, in turn, lays the groundwork for the creation of a more robust and sustainable political climate.
Politics should not be conducted with narrow-minded, self-serving, unthinking, selfish individuals who lack mental flexibility. As such people act solely in their own interests, this kind of approach quickly takes hold of political ranks like a weed and destroys the political organisation. It is precisely at this point that those who set out with such individuals must learn to recognise them during the process and, by identifying them early on, confront them openly. For when these individuals establish a system based on their own interests, they will eventually marginalise other players-particularly the idealistic and hard-working ones- from political life, or be forced to surrender the entire system to them. Such a situation hinders collective struggle and social development, thereby posing a serious threat to the healthy functioning of democracy. Consequently, it is of great importance for those active in the political arena to keep their distance from such individuals, as this is crucial for the development of a more successful and sustainable approach to governance in the long term.
The Limits of Pragmatism: Maintaining a Balance Should Not Be Equated with a Lack of Principle
Pragmatism exists in politics and is necessary, but it cannot replace principles and ideology. This is because, when faced with a problem, whilst it is important to come up with immediate and practical solutions, these solutions may not have a lasting impact. For long-term success and sustainability, sound principles and ideological foundations are required in the formulation of policies. These principles reflect a society’s values and strengthen solidarity among individuals. Therefore, it is essential to proceed with pragmatism; however, implementing this approach without a solid ideological framework may, over time, lead to the system becoming unstable. In conclusion, pragmatism in politics must go beyond being merely a tool and be complemented by principles that form a cohesive whole.
Politics is something that is conducted openly. Politics cannot and should not be practised by concealing oneself or presenting one’s aims and objectives in a misleading manner. Acting with integrity and transparency is of the utmost importance in order to inform the public and encourage greater participation. Politics is not merely a struggle for power, but also a means of addressing people’s needs and building a better future. For this reason, politicians and leaders must openly share their thoughts and visions. Only through sincere communication can we build trust and bring about positive change in society.
These are the lessons I have drawn from my own experience in politics. These lessons are crucial for gaining a deeper understanding of politics and applying it effectively. Of course, these fundamental principles can be expanded upon with sub-headings or additional points. For example, developing communication skills, analysing social dynamics correctly, and prioritising ethical values form the cornerstones of a political career. Each principle has the potential to enhance not only individual success but also social benefit. In this context, keeping abreast of the evolution of political thought and remaining in a constant process of learning provides a significant advantage.
